In 2006, Coca-Cola spent approximately 2.6 billion dollars worldwide in advertising. Microsoft spent over 11 billion dollars in 2009, nearly 20% of their revenue.

Companies like Coca-Cola and Microsoft don't make such big investments on a whim. A lot of time and effort went into finding out what was effective.They probably know their customers better than anyone.

It can be easy to lose sight of your own brand, message and reputation in your community when competing against large corporations. We live in an age of advertising. Corporations demand a lot of attention. However, there are three lessons from the big guys that make smaller advertising campaigns incredibly effective. Here are three tips to think about when using promotional items for your business.

1. Start with Your Customer

How well do you know your ideal customer? What does your ideal customer do each day or each week? Things like grocery bags, pens and notepads can match your customer's lifestyle perfectly. Your name or your brand is within their reach daily and part of their everyday life. Include a QR code on your item and it becomes a link to your website.

2. Make it Unique

We love routines, but we also love what's new and different. Creative USB drives can be enough to draw people's attention or start a conversation between people. It's a way of making things a little more interesting for people while putting your brand in front of their eyes the whole time. 3. Can it be Used Over and Over?

Is Advertising an Expense or an Investment?

Imagine spending a few dollars on business cards, or on a mobile website, and doubling the number of your clients. Can an expense can give you returns like that?

Most people know immediately that advertising should be an investment, but it can be hard to treat it that way. An investment takes time, research, measurement and risk. An investment is a decision you make and see through, while an expense can way too easily become just another routine bill to pay.

Advertising is an investment when you focus on the return. What can you do to keep your advertising an investment rather than an expense?

1. Do the Research

The investor Warren Buffett only puts his money into something he knows thoroughly. That doesn't mean he is unwilling to learn something new. He just does the research first. The same can be said for advertising. Many forms of advertising and marketing are available, but that doesn't mean they will fit your needs. Start with what you know.

Good investors also know they have to keep learning and adapting to keep up with change. When it comes to effective advertising, there is information is out there. Other businesses have faced these problems too. You can learn from them if you do the research.

2. Keep an Eye on Returns

An investment gives you returns - cold, hard, measurable returns. Expenses don't. When it comes to advertising, it's important to put in the effort and find a way to measure the return.

Measuring the returns on advertising can be done by anyone on your staff. Simply ask your customers, "How did you find out about us?"

Customers will tell you. And besides the information you collect, the added benefit is an opportunity to connect to your customers on a personal level. That in itself can lead to great advertising (that is, if you believe in something called word-of-mouth).

3. Give it Time

Google wasn't built in a day. Sergey Brin and Larry Page took the time to carefully plan and fine-tune their great idea. It took even more time to get people using Google and trusting it for searches. But the results for the company have been incredible. Google now dominates all internet advertising. Brin and Page treated practically everything in their business as an investment. And that meant everything was worth the time and effort to do it right.

4. When You Have an Edge, Take the Chance

Every business has to manage risk, but sometimes the odds are in your favour. If you have a great product or service and find the right way to tell people about it, the returns will come in. If you've put in the time, the research and the effort to get good feedback, you will have an edge for your business, and an edge for your future investments.

Imagine putting your advertising message where a potential customer might look at it for half an hour, or even longer. Repetition is an important part of advertising. Why not put your message where eyes will see it again and again and again?

Table tents are used for displays on restaurant tables, hotelroom dressers, or even store counters. You might find tent cards in a real estateoffice or a seminar workshop of a conference. They are also known as table top menu holders. A lot of vibrant and specificinformation can be packed into a very small presentation with a tent card. And best of all, a customer might look at it several times in just one visit.

They might appear limited or specialized in use, but these table top displays get a lot ofexposure to captured audiences. Most print advertising can be lost from theaudience's sight with just a flip of a page, but with table tents, someonemight look at your company's information several times over an hour-longdinner or over a lengthy appointment. The bottom or border area of the tent card is often used for advertising space or for highlighting brand products.

In The Business of Change

Henry A. Wallace was Vice-President of the USA under Franklin Roosevelt. In the late 1940s he ran for president with a very progressive platform. Eggs and tomatoes were thrown at him because he promised such things as voting rights to blacks. Hardly seventy years ago - it seems quaint and so hard to imagine now, things have changed so much since his day.

Wallace is known for saying, "The only certainty in life is change."

He came in fourth in that presidential race. He turned away from politics and decided to go into farming where he made a number of advances in agricultural sciences. A breed of chicken from Wallace's work became the majority of all egg-laying chickens sold around the whole world. (source)

Wallace must have known the old saying, "When life gives you lemons, squeeze the heck out of them and make lemonade." After people threw eggs at him, Wallace gave the world even better eggs!

This may seem to have very little to do with printing or design or business, but Wallace's story is an example of what businesses have to deal with today. Even with a top-notch product or business idea, you might get nothing but eggs thrown at you (and that's if you're lucky.)

It doesn't mean you should stop, though. Maybe what's needed is something new, like a change of direction.

Wallace also said, "change can be directed toward a constructive end."

We are taking our website and blog in a few new directions. We hope we can share with you some stories about running (and surviving) a small business, along with useful information about the world of print, design, and information management.

A: Direct Mail is a traditional advertising technique that involves a business sending out printed materials to individual mail boxes. The message for each direct mail campaign varies from fundraising requests to awareness campaigns to store opening coupons. Creativity reigns in direct mail campaigns.

The most effective direct mail campaigns are well researched to appeal to the target market. When the piece is targeted to the consumer, they will actually care about the message, and won’t consider the campaign “junk mail.” Research methods depend on the company, but include demographic information, past and current clients, reward members, and survey responses.

Direct mail campaigns don’t need to be large, especially if they target market is extremely focused. Instead of spending a large amount of money on television or radio ads, focus on a select few individuals that you know will appreciate your message. Quality campaigns trump quantity campaigns.

To avoid a large expense, start small and focused. You can then experiment with different graphics, messages and styles until you find a mailing piece that works and drives sales or donations to your company.

A: SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is the process of making your website show up in the top of a search engine listing. By targeting specific key words, and search patterns, SEO allows you to show up at the top of a Google, Bing, or Yahoo (amongst others) search, which drives traffic to your website.

How to use SEO to grow your business:

SEO is not an exact science. Search engines are constantly changing how they rank websites. Good SEO builds on your website content, tags, and constant updates to keep your pages showing up first.

SEO happens non-organically (tags, keywords) and organically (new content, blog postings, when people link to your site). Having both parts is key to getting the top spot.

You want your page to show up at the top of searches, as that is where most people will click. The further down the page, the less likely customers will find your website. The more customers that find your site, the more income you should generate (unless you have a terrible website!)

Q. What is a bleed?

A: When you would like your printed document to have an image or a colour that extends to the very edge of the page, you need a bleed. A document with a bleed is printed on oversized paper, with the items that bleed extending beyond the dimensions of the final size paper.

**Always use a bleed when you want your colour to extend to the edge.**

When designing a document with bleeds there are three sizes to take into account; these sizes are defined by lines: the bleed line, the trim line, and the safety line. The bleed line is typically set at 0.125” outside of your trim line.

The safety line is 0.125” inside the trim line and is an area in which all type should remain to ensure that it will be printed and to allow for a bit of movement, which happens while printing.

Example: When creating a business card, the final size will be 3.5 x 2. So I will make my bleed line at 3.75 x 2.25, my trim line at 3.5 x 2, and my safety line at 3.25 x 1.75. I will ensure that all of my important info remains centered inside of the safety line.

Follow these bleed guidelines, and you are sure to have a great looking document.

At H&R, we take three things into consideration when designing the perfect QR code for you:

1) Error Correction Code - this allows part of the barcode to be damaged yet it will remain readable. For example 30% of the barcode is damaged yet it can still be read. The higher the percentage, the larger the code will be. Space and design wise, we’ll help you to decide what barcode size is best for you.

2) Redirection - the barcode is printed once yet its function can change over time. Amazon S3 houses the content and it can be changed at no extra cost. So if you want to have the barcode go to your homepage now, but go to a coupon, or a contest microsite, you could do that without having to reprint another barcode. Right now there is no charge to have redirection added to your barcode.

3) Direct - the opposite of redirection, where the barcode goes directly to one spot and cannot be changed.

What is Aqueous coating?

High Gloss Coating – has the highest gloss but can only be printed on one side of the paper.

Regular Gloss Coating – less glossy than high gloss but can be printed on both sides of a sheet.

Matte Coating – a flat coating that makes the paper less glossy.

What are Pantone colors?

Pantone colors refer to the Pantone Matching System (PMS), which is a color matching system used by the printing industry. The PMS system assigns a number which breaks down the CMYK (see earlier post, “What is CMYK and RGB?”) colour values with a mathematical formula so that any printer in the world can exactly replicate the same colour using the Pantone system. Printing colors are identified by a specific number. It is important to remember that the colours on your computer screen will look differently when printed and you should ask to see PMS sample before you allow the job to be printed.

CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key Black. CMYK is a subtractive colour model used in colour printing.

RGB stands for Red, Green, Blue. RGB is an additive colour model where white is the “additive” combination of all primary coloured lights, while black is the absence of light.

In printing we use the CMYK model. The natural color of the paper acts as the white, while black results from a full combination of coloured inks.

Please format your file in CMYK format before sending. Adobe CS5 Suite series will automatically convert to the file CMYK when saved as a PDF.

Q. Why do I need to see a proof?

A. Proofing is the final step before printing your order. We will send you one copy of your order as a proof for your approval. Sending a proof ensures that your document looks exactly as you intended before your order goes to print. The proof allows you to ensure that the layout, colours and type, appear as you envisioned. Mistakes do happen and it is best for everyone if they are caught in the proofing process. After you have looked over the proof and approved it, please fill out the approval form and email or fax it back to us and the printing will begin.

Q. What type of file do I send to print?

A. The Portable Document Format (PDF) is generally the preferred file format for submitting a document for printing. By design, a PDF file incorporates the information needed to maintain document consistency from system to system. Most file formats such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Microsoft Word are easily converted to PDF format. We currently run the Adobe CS5 Series and if you do as well, you may send us your original file.

A. Bond paper is known as the workhorse of the office world, as it is used from photocopying, to stationery, to legal documents.

Bond paper was originally used to write and document legal statements and thus comes the saying, “a mans word is his bond.”

Bond runs the gamut in terms of quality and weight. Bond paper ranges from light, cheap photocopy paper to heavy, high-quality paper used in archival documents.

A. In short, it is a type of paper that has a smooth and sometimes glossy surface finish.

In detail, the purpose of using a coated paper is to provide ink holdout. Coated paper has a traditional fibre core which is encased in a clay coating which is "buffed" to an extremely smooth surface. Coated paper requires different inks than regular paper, as the ink dries through oxidization as opposed to absorption, thus giving a more vivid appearance.

It even acts as a partial replacement for laminating, as the coating protects and adds value to any document.
